Field methods classes

This is another IRB question. Some IRBs exempt data collected in a field methods class from review at all; others classify the review as generally expedited. Since data collected in a field methods class can eventually be published, I personally think that field methods classes should go through a review. Also, it is good practice for grad students. Is there a middle way?

I think the real challenge, even with expedited review, would be to get approval of a class-generated IRB proposal and protocol in time to actually do any field work in the classroom. The turn around time on an IRB proposal here is at least 3 or 4 weeks, even with expedited review, and this would seriously cut into the semester. I do agree, however, that students should get the experience of writing up an IRB proposal.
